Have you ever looked closely at your eyes and wondered what all those colours, fibres and markings might mean? That is part of what makes iridology so fascinating. The iris, the coloured part of the eye, can be studied for different patterns and characteristics that iridologists traditionally use to better understand a person's constitution, inherited strengths and areas that may benefit from extra support. As a fourth-generation holistic practitioner, herbalist and certified iridologist, I bring both traditional knowledge and formal training into my consultations. If you have been curious about iridology but aren't quite sure what happens during a session, here's what you can expect when you come to see me. What Can an Iridology Reading Tell You?Iridology is not used to diagnose disease, and it isn't meant to replace medical testing. Instead, I use it as a tool to help me look at the body as a whole. In iridology, different areas of the iris are traditionally associated with different areas and systems of the body. I look at things such as the colour of the iris, the structure and density of the fibres, pigmentation, rings and other markings. These patterns can help me understand your basic constitution and some of the tendencies you may have been born with This is one of the things I love most about iridology. We are not all built the same way. Some people naturally have stronger constitutions in certain areas while being more sensitive in others. Understanding those differences can help us make more personalized choices when it comes to nutrition, herbs, supplements and everyday wellness. What Do I Look for in Your Eyes? When I look at an iris, I'm not looking at one marking and deciding what it means on its own. I'm looking at the whole eye. I look at the colour, fibres, density, pigmentation and different markings throughout the iris. I also consider where those markings appear within the traditional iris map and how everything relates to the overall constitution. Every person's eyes are different, which is why I don't believe in a one-size-fits-all approach to wellness. Two people may come to me with similar concerns, but what I see in their eyes, along with what they tell me about themselves, may lead us in very different directions. Iridology and Whole-Body Wellness For me, iridology has always fit naturally into holistic wellness because it encourages us to look at the whole person rather than focusing on one thing in isolation. Digestion, stress, nutrition, lifestyle, sleep and our everyday habits can all influence how we feel. During your consultation, we can talk about what you have been experiencing and look at how that fits with your individual constitution. From there, I may recommend nutritional changes, herbs, supplements or simple lifestyle adjustments that can better support you. My goal isn't to hand everyone the same list of things to take. It's to help you better understand your own body and find practical ways to support it. What Happens During an Iridology Consultation?Your appointment is simple, relaxed and completely non-invasive. I examine your irises in person using a magnifying glass and light. I prefer working directly with the eyes rather than relying only on photographs because it allows me to look closely at the fibres, colours and smaller details of the iris. I also look at the sclera (the white part of the eye), as part of my assessment. As we go through your consultation, I'll explain what I'm seeing and what the different patterns may mean from an iridology perspective. You'll also have plenty of opportunity to ask questions and tell me what has been going on with your health and wellness. I ask clients to bring any supplements and medications they are currently taking with them to their appointment. This allows me to see what you are already using and take that into consideration before making additional recommendations. I also use muscle testing during the consultation to help me further personalize the recommendations we discuss. What Happens After Your Reading? This is where I believe iridology becomes especially useful. The purpose isn't simply to look into your eyes, tell you what I see and send you home. It's about taking that information and using it to make choices that make sense for you. You may discover that your constitution has certain areas that could use more support. We might talk about digestion, nutrition, herbs, supplements or lifestyle changes. Sometimes the recommendations are very simple. I don't believe wellness needs to be complicated. Small changes, made consistently and with a better understanding of your own body, can be an important part of supporting your overall wellbeing. Why I Practice Iridology Holistic wellness has been part of my life for generations. I am a fourth-generation holistic practitioner, and I have also spent many years studying and working with herbs and natural wellness. Iridology became another way for me to bring that knowledge together and look at the individual person sitting in front of me. That combination of traditional knowledge, formal training and years of experience is a big part of how I work today. I don't want you to leave your appointment feeling overwhelmed with information. I want you to leave understanding your body a little better than you did when you walked in. Research shows acidic water hardens the cell and does not allow it to absorb nutrients. Unless the body’s pH level is slightly alkaline, the body cannot heal itself. If your body’s pH is not balanced, you cannot effectively assimilate vitamins, minerals and food supplements. Mucus in the small intestine can block your body from absorbing vitamins and minerals.
Why are people sick? pH is the abbreviation for potential hydrogen and is the measure of its hydrogen-ion concentration. If the pH reading of the fluid is higher it is more alkaline and oxygen rich. The lower the pH reading, the more acidic and oxygen deprived the fluid is. Your body pH affects everything. Diseases cannot survive in an alkaline state; they thrive in an acidic environment. An acidic pH can occur from, an acid forming diet, emotional stress, toxic overload, and/or immune reactions or any process that deprives the cells of oxygen and other nutrients. We think that stress is just stress, but what we need to realize is the effects of stress on our body and why our stress levels sometimes feel uncontrollable. In fact, stress doesn't just stem from our brain, but our gut as well. Let me explain... There are 100 trillion different types of bugs/bacteria (both good and bad) that live in the gut and they are actively involved in so many aspects of our physiology that directly affect the brain’s function moment to moment. They also influence the brain’s long term health and resistance to disease. These "good and bad" bugs have to be kept in balance as both are needed to maintain optimal health. Through many studies, research and journal publications, it's now becoming increasingly clear that bacteria, fungi, viruses and other microorganisms in the gut (intestinal tract) play a MAJOR role in your whole health, physically, emotionally and mentally. Your intestinal tract contains hundreds of good and bad bacteria that are essential to your health. Again the importance of this is to keep it balanced. Stress levels, antibiotics, poor diet, sugary foods, refined carbs, chlorinated/fluoridated tap water, toxic bottled water, parasites, inflammation, and the widespread use of antibacterial soap and hand sanitizers can disrupt the critical balance between the “good” and “bad” bacteria in your gut. Contrary to what we think we know, the brain as the organ is all that's in charge, but your gut is far more involved in our brain function than we realize. It sends far more information to your brain than your brain sends to your gut... For example you've most likely experienced the sensation of butterflies in your stomach when you're nervous, or even had an upset stomach when you were angered or stressed out? This happens because our gut is sending massive signals to the brain to alert stress. The issue at hand is that its not only in your "head" its that any problems in your gut will directly impact your mental health, leading to issues like anxiety and depression. The quality, quantity, and composition of the bacteria in your gut have enormous influence on your brain. Dr. David Perlmutter explores this phenomenon in great detail in his book, Brain Maker: The Power of Gut Microbes to Heal and Protect Your Brain-for Life. Did You Know? That we actually have two nervous systems: The Central nervous system (CNS) which is composed of your brain and spinal cord and the second is the Enteric nervous system, which is the intrinsic nervous system of your gastrointestinal tract. Both of our nervous systems are created from identical tissue during fetal development, one part turns into your central nervous system while the other part develops into your enteric nervous system. These two systems are connected via the vagus nerve, the tenth cranial nerve that runs from your brain stem down to your abdomen. It is now proven that the vagus nerve is the primary route your gut bacteria uses to transmit information to your brain. We have neurons in both our brain and in the gut. These neurons produce neurotransmitters like serotonin, which is also found in your brain. The greatest concentration of serotonin, which is involved in mood control, depression, rage and aggression, is found in your intestines and not in your brain. Gut bacteria also produces dopamine, acetylcholine and GABA, although these molecules cannot cross the blood brain barrier, they indirectly affect brain function via their actions at the vagus nerve. In a few studies it been shown that the probiotic (good bacteria) known as Bifidobacterium longum has been shown to help normalize anxiety-like behavior in mice with infectious colitis. Psychological and physical stressors alter the composition and metabolism of the gut microbiota. And changes to the gut microbiome can affect emotional behaviour and related brain systems. So in human's suffering from colitis, IBS, and other digestive issues that lack this vital probiotic will cause upheaval in the digestive tract hence impacting the brain function which also impacts mood. Think of our bodies as a domino set. When one system gets knocked down the rest of the systems shortly follow. “We’re right at the dawn of a whole new way of thinking about brain development and brain heath. And the neuroscientific evidence for the role of the microbiome is just getting stronger and stronger at the basic level.” ~ Tim Cryan How Do We Protect The Intestinal Biome And The Brain: First and foremost we need Probiotics: "PROBIOTICS = FOR LIFE" Every person has their own mixture of intestinal bacteria that’s as unique as their fingerprint. All these beneficial microorganisms are essential for your overall health. We need probiotics for essential and effective digestion so the body can break down and absorb food efficiently. Probiotics also keep harmful bacteria in check and help keep your immune system healthy. They help you absorb essential minerals and can even manufacture vitamins your body requires and carries out to the rest of the body's systems. Without a proper balance in the intestinal tract, the body has a very difficult time transporting nutrients where they need to go. Secondly...Our Diet. By adding the following foods to your diet, it can boost your friendly flora naturally: Fermented Dairy Products Such As Yogurt & Kefir: When looking for good yogurt and kefir, look for brands that state they contain live cultures of bacteria. Avoid yogurt and kefir brands that contain added sugar or state 0% fat. Sugar feeds unfriendly gut bacteria, nullifying some of yogurt’s beneficial effects and most importantly avoid any yogurt and kefir that contain no fat. When fat is removed from a food, a harmful preservative of some kind is added so the product can sustain itself through to the expiration date and beyond. Besides these products need the fat to keep its natural bacteria state. I myself prefer kefir since it contains a greater variety of cultures than yogurt and is well tolerated even by those who are lactose intolerant. Other Fermented Foods: Pickled vegetables of all kinds including sauerkraut and kimchi. If you buy these food products in a store, look for those labeled “unpasteurized” since heat destroys the good bacteria that we are actually needing for brain-gut balance. Other fermented food that help are pure mother Apple Cider Vinegar, pure Kombucha and unpasteurized cheeses. Third, You need to include Pre-biotics in your diet: Foods high in prebiotic fibers include asparagus, Jerusalem artichokes, bamboo shoots, bananas, barley, chicory, leeks, garlic, lentils, mustard greens, onions, tomatoes, dark chocolate especially its less processed forms, cocoa powder and cacao nibs, all stimulate the growth of good bacteria. “All disease begins in the gut.” -Hippocrates In Conclusion: Even though you may think that your "gut" is in great health, the symptoms of an unhealthy gut can often manifest themselves in other parts of the body not just the digestive system. Even if you don't suffer from IBS, heart burn, stomach upsets and other digestive issues, the manifesting can show up as feelings of overwhelmed stress, rage, anger, anxiety, unexplained allergies, poor mental focus, poor immune function, autoimmune illnesses, and so on. Now that an awareness has been brought up, check with your body and ask it what it would like to have to be more healthy and thriving. It's important to remember the root cause of the symptoms we experience all stem from our gut. From the chaos in our daily lives, to anxiety, stress, depression to the foods and liquid that we drink the key to healing and feeling youthful is BALANCE. Obtaining alkalinity is about restoring the body's natural state. Acidity or acidosis running rampant through our system doesn't contribute to overall health. ACID = Illness / ALKALINE = Health Did you know that the type of water we drink has a huge impact on bodily functions,? We are made of 70% + water and we need to sustain a proper pH balance to assist in the healing process. One of the most important things a person can do to begin the process of balancing and reducing the acids from the variety of foods we eat and liquids we drink is to change our water. The water has to be in an alkaline state, it has to be purified but retain its minerals at the same time, it should be energized with hydrogen and the water has to be wetter so our bodies can actually absorb it, we have to break down the water clustering effect which is simple when we remove its acid state (acid causes the molecules of water to stick together) For anyone who suffers from water retention, take note that this is due to your body not absorbing the water your drinking and acidosis is part of the culprit. We need bioavailable water that can permeate the cell membranes, this is all simply done with the correct water system. Alkaline water from a water ionizer or pitcher provides that negative ORP (Oxidation Reduction Potential) and pH balance that helps probiotic bacteria thrive. By drinking alkaline water, you actually “tip the scales” in favor of probiotic bacteria. In conclusion you now know how important gut health is, how it effects our brain and what you can do to fix it. We have two connected nervous systems that we have to protect. Stay healthy, thriving and strong! Are You Drinking Enough Water? If you have a health problem, you are most likely acidic; Research shows that unless the body’s pH level is slightly alkaline, the body cannot heal itself. So, no matter what type of modality you choose to use to take care of your health problem, it won’t be effective until the pH level is up. If your body’s pH is not balanced, you cannot effectively assimilate vitamins, minerals and food supplements. Also, mucus on the small intestine can block your body from vitamin and mineral absorption. Your body pH affects everything. Disease cannot survive in an alkaline state and yet they thrive in an acidic environment. An acidic pH can occur from, an acid forming diet, emotional stress, toxic overload, and/or immune reactions or any process that deprives the cells of oxygen and other nutrients. An acidic balance in your body will:
The Significance of Water & Why We May Have A Dehydration Epidemic A recent Harvard study shows 25% of children said they didn’t drink any water in a day, choosing sports drink, soda and juice instead. While that is concerning, it’s even scarier to see that 70% - 75% of American adults are in a chronic state of dehydration. Often, many people think dehydration comes from extreme heat or physical exertion but that is inaccurate. It happens when we don’t hydrate our bodies sufficiently for daily living. Most people aren’t even aware they are dehydrated. Water is vital to our overall health and longevity but most Americans don’t consume enough water and often times not the correct water. Water is essential to every single process within our bodies. Our brain and heart contain 73% water. Our lungs Water carries vital oxygen to our brains. Our muscles and kidneys are 79% water. Your blood, responsible for transporting nutrients throughout your body is 92% water. Your lungs, that take oxygen from the air to provide your body with oxygen, are 83% water. Even your bones are around 25% water. Water serves as a lubricant, a base for saliva and fluids surrounding the joints. Additionally, it regulates the body temperature, eliminates waste and regulates metabolism. Dehydration causes muscle weakness, poor mental performance, headaches, sluggishness and more. Americans tend to consume many beverages throughout the day but not nearly enough water. Most people especially those in North America, consume more dehydrating beverages than hydrating beverages. Dehydrating liquids include soda, coffee, tea, and alcohol. These dehydrating liquids counteract hydrating liquids. This means that we need to compensate for each dehydrating beverage we consume. Unfortunately, this doesn’t happen in the majority of people's lives. The Journal of Nutrition recently found that bad moods typically start with a lack of hydration. Women studied showed more anger, frustration, depression and annoyance when they are dehydrated. Additionally, when you are dehydrated, your saliva stops proper production, it results in an abundance of bacteria, leading to bad breath, sore gums etc. Most dentists recommend drinking more water to their patients with halitosis. Furthermore, as we age, our body’s thirst mechanism doesn’t work as well. This means it is easier for older adults to become dehydrated and be completely unaware. For example, our body constantly craves food which in truth, our body is thirsty and trying to communicate this symptom in a way one would listen. Lemon Water Always start your morning with a glass of pure water and a few slices of lemon. Also, it should be noted here that most times we are not actually hungry, we're thirsty. So make sure you don't confuse thirst with hunger. Drink a glass of pure water when you feel hungry to see if the hunger dissipates or not. 2. Don't Skip Meals Skipping meals can actually cause your body to go into a fat-storing mode to protect itself. Your body does this will really make it difficult to burn off the calories. 3. Mind, Body Connection Mental and emotional states have a big impact on our physical body. It's vital to identify the emotional triggers that lead you to seek unhealthy comfort food. Minimize the processed foods and track your emotional state of being when hunger strikes. Be sure to take 30 minutes for you, to do what makes you calm and brings you joy. |
